Microtest provides clinical systems in primary care

Microtest is a smaller (fourth out of eight) clinical system supplier to GPs.  It is more responsive to the needs to patients, general practitioners and their teams.

It is not that small; in fact it is the fourth out of eight in the national list of GP suppliers by market share, ahead of TPP for example. It could expand to five times its current user base without changing its character.

Microtest clinical systems provide all the functionality of the other major systems, but are much faster to use. There is less time staring at the computer screen and more time looking at patients in Microtest surgeries. The ergonomics of clinical systems have not been evaluated properly but the author has used all four major clinical systems and always comes back to Microtest.

It has a unique method of upgrading its software which is incremental. There are no different versions of software out there. Update and upgrades are the same process.
You can use two interfaces.... the "older" Telnet style preferred for speed of data entry, and Evolution, the windows type interface, which provides new functionality and features. The back end is the same with each interface.

You can use both interfaces at the same time, even on the same patient. Indeed the system allows you to log into the same patient and templates at the same time without fear of loss of data.

Microtest's loyal user base is quick to ask the software team to remove any extra key-presses...

The software has one of the best dispensing practice (pharmacy) modules according to Dispensing Practices Association.

Everything is integrated, such as scanning and document handling, appointments and pathology links.

Microtest has been used in prisons as it can be tweaked easily for special needs.

The back bone is an SQL server which is scalable and can offer different interfaces.

Microtest’s weakness: they spent too much time developing a good system and not enough marketing it.    It is up to us to tell the world!

The future:  Secure and Great

Microtest has impressed civil servants recently.

It has a well planned path to all the levels expected under Connecting For Health, including a safe, backed up Hosted Service, with local continuity should N3 go down.
